Read on for insight into the CR analysis Ethical Corporation subscribers will receive in the February edition.

The first of three features this month provides full analysis of the Doha climate conference. It highlights the new potential business opportunities presenting themselves. It focuses on how companies, not government, continue to take the leadership positions on driving sustainability. Complementing this is will be a case study on sustainable energy production in Hong Kong – an example of a properly sustainable solution that can be brought to scale.

The second feature delves into security and human rights examines in the extractive sector. Following the violence in the South African mining industry in late 2012, what does the extractive industry need to do better? What do the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights offer?

The final feature reviews alternative corporate ownership structures. The article presents the benefits for corporate performance, and sustainability, from an employee ownership like John Lewis, operating as a co-operative or other alternative structures.

The first in-depth focus in February’s strategy and management section is a detailed case study on Desso, the Dutch floor coverings specialists. The case study includes an interview with the new CEO Alexander Collot d’Escury on what cradle-to-cradle really means and the challenges in achieving it.

The strategy and management section also includes the next in the series of essays from David Grayson, director of the Doughty Centre for Corporate Responsibility at Cranfield School of Management and a member of Ethical Corporation’s editorial advisory board. He gives his views on how boards of companies organise oversight and governance of their commitment to sustainability.

In February’s review section, the latest sustainability reporting from Volvo and Co-operative is dissected and analysed. The review of Co-operative’s CSR report is particularly good reading as this report was the winner of Ethical Corporation’s Reporting X-Factor competition at the recent CR Reporting Summit.

Plus, February’s edition has all the usual comment and analysis from our regular columnists. There is the update on the latest in sustainable business in the EthicsWatch, NGOwatch and CRwatch columns. Finally, there is the regular Ethical Corporation CR cheatsheet containing all the latest research news from companies, NGOs and multilaterals that you need to know.
