Read on for insight into the CR analysis Ethical Corporation subscribers will receive in the December/January joint issue.

London 30/11/11

Firstly, in the annual review of the year, Ethical Corporation’s editorial advisory panel provide their expert views on the sustainable business events of 2011. The annual review will also consider how sustainable business may evolve in 2012.

The December-January issue will also contain an in-depth investigation into the pros and cons of extracting natural gas through the fracking process. On the one hand there is potential in developing natural gas supplies that are cleaner than currently available alternatives. On the other, the process involved in extracting gas from shale by fracking has become highly environmentally controversial. And the anti-fracking lobby has attracted a lot of funding. Where are the rights and wrongs in this murky debate?

As retailers gear up for the festive season and new year celebrations, Ethical Corporation considers sustainable food. Many big retail chains have announced big sustainability plans, but do their festive offerings stick to their sustainability plans? The feature will consider both the consumer and supplier perspective. At a time when retailers are pushing sales and consumption, are consumers making more ethical choices, and what are suppliers doing?

In the Strategy and Management section, Prof David Grayson, in his regular essay series, takes a fresh look at how to engage the top business schools with corporate responsibility and business ethics.

Elsewhere, there will be analysis of Sainsbury’s recently announced 20-20 sustainability plan. There will be a review of the plan plus a comparison of the plan against competing retailers.

The Strategy and Management section will conclude with focus on what ethical business groups can learn from the crisis in the eurozone.

The country briefing for December/January’s issue will review the overall picture of corporate responsibility in Russia

There will be an overview of the history of sustainable business in Russia and how it differs from other countries. There will be a review of the big corporate issues in the country with case studies of the companies that are leading the way in responsible business. Plus there will be an analysis of the role of NGOs and business associations as well as the influence of Russia’s federal system of government and its national and provincial policies on sustainable business.

EthicsWatch will analyse the new EU rules on corporate responsibility and what they will mean in practice for business.

Energy giant EDF’s head of security was recently sent to prison for three years for hiring a company to spy on Greenpeace. EthicsWatch will ask why the company was spying, what the company really knew and, whether EDF has been commercially affected by this case.

The latest released rankings from the UK’s Environment Agency on companies signed up to the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) will also be featured in EthicsWatch. Who are the leaders and the laggards? What are the benefits of being part of the CRC for companies, and what do environmental experts say?

The final section of EthicsWatch looks at the Global Reporting Initiative’s new Sustainability Disclosure Database. This includes data on the sustainability and environmental, social and governance (ESG) transparency of over three thousand companies worldwide. EthicsWatch will consider what this updated database and functionality does, and asks what GRI thinks companies will gain from it. Will it change the ways that companies report?

The Review section will include reviews of the latest sustainability reports from India’s Tata Motors and Germany’s Merck.

As always there’ll have the usual academic news, book reviews and of course there are contributions from regular columnists; Mallen Baker, Paul French and Peter Knight.
