Business & Human Rights Research Centre is looking for a research assistant to support KnowTheChain’s goal of helping companies and investors to understand and address forced labour risks in their supply chains. Applicants must have proven experience in high quality research on labour rights or supply chain issues, strong interest in advancing labour rights in corporate supply chains and the right to work in the UK.

  • Salary: 27,500-29,000 GBP gross per annum pro rata for 2.5 days/week (depending on experience), plus 5% pension employer’s contribution

  • Location: London

  • Contract Type: 2.5 days per week until end of 2018

  • Reports to: KnowTheChain Project Lead

Business & Human Rights Resource Centre is a non-profit that tracks the human rights conduct of over 6,000 companies worldwide. It aims to build corporate transparency, strenghten corporate accountability and empower advocates. 

KnowTheChain–a partnership of Humanity United, the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre, Sustainalytics, and Verité—is a resource for businesses and investors who need to understand and address forced labor abuses within their supply chains. It benchmarks current corporate practices, develops insights, and provides practical resources that inform investor decisions and enable companies to comply with growing legal obligations while operating more transparently and responsibly.

Roles & responsibilities

  • Research forced labour risks and incidents in specific sectors or commodities

  • Support development of research formats

  • Research corporate disclosure on supply chain forced labour policies and practices, using e.g. annual reports, sustainability reports and UK Modern Slavery Act statements

  • Support gathering company responses to questionnaires

  • Support analysis and communication of research outcomes

  • Conduct research on methodologies that analyse forced labour in supply chains

  • Provide administrative support, such as updating contact details of stakeholders from civil society and business, and supporting webinars or events

  • Assist with other organizational work as necessary

Skills

  • Strong interest in advancing labour rights in corporate supply chains

  • Excellent English-language proficiency essential; additional languages are an asset

  • Good understanding of how to research and present complex information in a succinct and balanced way

  • Experience with research on labour rights or supply chain issues

  • Experience researching corporate human rights disclosure preferable

  • Strong Microsoft Excel and Word skills, data visualisation skills preferable

  • Excellent attention to detail
