Alexander Settles is the program director for the Canada-Russia Program at Corporate Center for Corporate Governance at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow, Russia. This is a joint program of the Schulich School of Business, York University, Toronto, Canada and the Higher School of Economics. The Center for Corporate Governance serves as a hub for corporate governance education and research within a network of university educators and non-governmental organizations interested in corporate governance and other business and management issues. Mr. Settles was previously an assistant policy scientist at the University of Delaware, USA where he consulted with governments and the private sector on issues related to management, economic development, e-government, information technology, land use planning and real estate market, and geographic information systems.

Anton Mifsud-Bonnici is director in the communications and external affairs function at the BP office in Moscow, Russian Federation. His role includes corporate responsibility for BP businesses in Russia.

Prior to taking up this role, he was a senior adviser on corporate responsibility issues at BP’s Group headquarters in London, United Kingdom. He was part of the Communications & External Affairs function. He advised BP businesses around the world on socio-economic risk and issue management. He supported the Group's thinking on the private sector's relationship with society and development. His background includes human rights protection, consulting and teaching. He is a graduate of the University of Malta and of Columbia University.

BP has been operating in Russia since 1990. Our activities cover oil and gas exploration, lubricants, chemicals, aviation fuels and lubricants for the marine market. In particular, BP owns 50% of TNK-BP, a major oil company with the majority of its assets in Russia. TNK-BP was formed in August 2003. Other 50% belong to the group of Russian investors: Alfa Group, Access Industries and Renova (AAR). TNK-BP’s 2004 oil production rose nearly 14 per cent to 1.45 million barrels a day. Output is estimated to grow by some 5% in 2005. BP is an active player in the Sakhalin Region, progressing development efforts through a partnership with the Russian state oil company, Rosneft. In 2004 the partners successfully completed the drilling of its first exploration well under the Kaigansky–Vasukansky exploration licence and encountered significant volumes of oil and gas. Preparations to drill second exploration well are now under way. BP also participates in the Caspian Pipeline Consortium project.


Антон Мифсуд-Бонничи , директор по внешним связям представительства ВР в России. В московском офисе компании он, в частности, курирует вопросы корпоративной ответственности бизнеса ВР в России.

До приезда в Москву А.Мифсуд-Бонничи был старшим советником по вопросам корпоративной ответственности в штаб-квартире ВР в Лондоне, Великобритания. Работая в функциональном подразделении по внешним связям, он консультировал подразделения ВР в различных странах мира по вопросам управления социально-экономическими рисками, участвовал в определении и реализации политики ВР в сфере отношений между бизнесом и обществом, а также программ развития.

До прихода в ВР А.Мифсуд-Бонничи занимался вопросами защиты прав человека, консультационной и преподавательской деятельностью. А.Мифсуд-Бонничи – выпускник Университета Мальты и Колумбийского университета.

Компания BP работает в России с 1990 года, участвуя в проектах добычи нефти и газа, переработки углеводородного сырья, в поставках на российский рынок смазочных масел, авиационного и судового топлива, а также в трейдинговых операциях. В частности, ВР принадлежат 50% ТНК-ВР  — крупной нефтегазовой компании, которая была образована в августе 2003  года. Еще 50% акций ТНК-ВР принадлежат группе российских инвесторов в  составе «Альфа Групп», «Аксесс Индастриз» и  «Ренова». В 2004  году ТНК-ВР увеличила добычу нефти почти на  14%, доведя ее до 1,45 млн. баррелей в день . В 2005 году ожидается рост добычи на 5%. На Сахалине BP в партнерстве с российской госкомпанией «Роснефть», ведет поиск углеводородного сырья на северо-восточном шельфе острова. В 2004 году партнеры успешно пробурили первую поисковую скважину на Кайганско – Васюканском участке и обнаружили значительные объемы нефти и газа. В настоящее время идет подготовка к бурению второй скважины. ВР также участвует в проекте Каспийского трубопроводного консорциума (КТК).

Close Joint-Stock Company "ARM Group Enterprises" was incorporated in 2003 to associate activities of several uncoordinated ARM Group companies within one Joint Holding Center capable to develop large-scale projects in oil production, oil logistics and timber sectors of Russian industry.

By 2003 separate ARM Group Companies had already gained adequate experience of work in previous Projects:

Oil Project "Bowel" joint venture with LUKoil for development and operation of Tedinskoe oilfield in Nenetskiy autonomous region - 1999 – 2002 – development stage, 2002 – 2004 operational stage.

Wood Industry Project "ARM Nord" 2002 – till present - timber growing, cutting and processing in Archangelsk region.

Current projects:
In July 2004 Company has already completed project - Srednevolzhsky Oil Terminal built in the Samara region (Zhigulevsk town) on the Volga River? That is now in operation.

In 2004 has been started engineering design work for construction Oil Transshipment Terminal in the Port of Onega (White Sea).

In 2004 Timber project in Archangelsk region moved further into timber processing business.

In Dec. 2004 ARM commissioned Bitumen transshipment terminal in St. Petersburg region.

In June 2004 ARM has launched Land Development project with acquisition of 500 hectares in Sochi area at the Black sea.

Can Atacik is a Project Coordinator with the World Bank Institute Corporate Social Responsibility and Corporate Governance Program. He has been responsible for developing and delivering training programs for business associations, business representatives, policy makers and academics. His most recent focus has been working with business associations to build their institutional capacity in order to more actively engage the private sector in the fight against HIV/AIDS. He also works on the development and delivery of learning programs on environmental and social accounting, sustainable competitiveness, improved corporate governance and the role of business in fighting corruption. Can, a Turkish national, joins the World Bank Institute from University of Pennsylvanias Fels Institute of Government where he served as a public sector consultant assisting government agencies develop performance measurement systems and restructure their service delivery. He has consulting experience in community engagement, building government and business partnerships and managing local economic and community development projects.

Overview of the Corporate Social Responsibility and Corporate Governance Program at the World Bank Institute. The program seeks to address the need for a better understanding of the role of business in society, recognizing that business is a vital partner in development. The program addresses the clear need for broader acceptance of corporate governance and social responsibility as vital components of corporate strategy, and highlights the importance of these issues in relation to poverty reduction, good governance and country competitiveness. The program, in alignment with World Bank Group's efforts, develops and deliver capacity building programs, using traditional and distance learning methods, targeting business associations; representatives from governments, private sector, academia; and youth. Since its launch at the World Economic Forum in Davos, in January 2000, the program has reached over 40,000 participants through its learning activities.

Gabriele Hartmann works in the Corporate Citizenship Department of SAP AG. She is responsible for the focus area “Governance and transparency” as well as the global roll-out of the newly established corporate citizenship guidelines. She reports to Christopher Sorek, Senior Vice President Public Communications at SAP. She studied Political Science, Philology and Theology in Heidelberg, Barcelona and Lynchburg/USA. She holds a Masters Degree in Political Science. She gained her first work experience at ABC Frankfurt, a leading PR agency. Before joining SAP, she built up the Public Affairs department at GCI Hering Schuppener, a communications consultany company where she was also part of senior management.

Vinnik Alla Emilievna , has graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Railway Engineering, Electrotechnical faculty. Having the engineering education, in Soviet times Alla was as an engineer in Computer Department of LNPO Pigment, later – in Giprosteklo.

From 1995 to 1998 Alla was a Sales Consultant in the “Dun & Bradstreet-Nord”, the St.Petersburg office of the international corporation, specialized on providing business information about companies as well as giving the credit recommendations all over the world. From 1998 to 2003 was the “Dun and Bradstreet-Nord” director.

In June, 2003 Alla was invited to become a director of the NGO “Center for Business Ethics and Corporate Governance”. At the same time Alla has lead the project "Training Needs Assessment for Business Ethics and Corporate Governance improvement", financed by the Eurasia foundation. At present Alla also works as the research director of the project "Accountability for Improving Corporate Governance", financed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Alla took part in preparing and translating the “ Business Ethics Manual for Russia, Independent States and Eastern Europe”, according to the order of the US Department of Commerce.

Working as a director of CBE she took part on as a speaker in several conferences, seminars, workshops.

Today Alla provides consulting services for on the business ethics issues officials, makes expert judgment and design of Codes of Conduct and Ethics Codes. She conducts seminars and trainings concerning design and implementing Codes of Conduct, reads lectures for students on business ethics, corporate governance and social responsibility issues.

С 1995 по 1998 была консультантом Санкт-Петербургского офиса международной корпорации «Дан энд Брэдстрит», специализирующейся на сборе, анализе и предоставлении деловой информации о компаниях и кредитных рекомендаций во всем мире. С 1998 по 2003 г.г.– возглавляла Санкт-Петербургский офис.

С июня 2003 г. была приглашена на должность директора некоммерческой организации «Центр деловой этики и корпоративного управления», также являлась директором проекта «Оценка образовательных потребностей по улучшению деловой этики и корпоративного управления», который финансировался фондом Евразия. Проводит семинары и тренинги по созданию и внедрению Кодексов поведения на предприятиях, читает лекции для студентов по деловой этике, корпоративному управлению и социальной ответственности бизнеса.

Matthew Murray has been professionally involved in US-Russian relations since 1979 as an entrepreneur, attorney and national security analyst. Mr. Murray, who graduated from Columbia University with a JD and Masters in International Affairs in 1988, served as Legislative Assistant for National Security Policy to Senator Edward Kennedy from 1982-1984, a research fellow at the Library of Congress in 1981 and a research assistant for Dr. Leslie Gelb at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace from 1979-1981. During this period, he helped write several pieces of legislation, articles and books on US arms control and defense policy. Between 1998-1991, Matthew was an attorney with Baker & McKenzie, working on corporate transactions in Russia.

In 1991, Matthew Murray founded Sovereign Ventures, Inc., a management consultancy that specializes in dispute resolution, rule of law development services and small business incubation in Russia. He has helped successfully resolve various investment disputes, by finding leverage in best business practices, Russian law, and international law and sharing know-how with Russian officials and business leaders. Mr. Murray was a member of the international legal consortium formed by the Federal Commission for the Securities Market and the European Bank for Re-construction and Development to research and write the Corporate Governance Code. Mr. Murray helped the US Department of Commerce write Business Ethics: A Manual for Managing a Responsible Business Enterprise in Emerging Market Economies, a manual designed to help businesses adopt ethics programs.

In October 2000, Matthew Murray helped found the Center for Business Ethics and Corporate Governance, one of the first non-profit organizations in Russia dedicated to helping private sector companies develop ethics programs. As Chairman of the Board of the Center for Business Ethics and Corporate Governance, Mr. Murray works with Russian and US private sector leaders, business and trade associations, NGOs and government officials on programs to help individual enterprises implement business ethics and corporate governance.

The mission of the Center for Business Ethics and Corporate Governance is to create social capital in the Russian Federation, the Independent States and Eastern Europe by helping to institutionalize ethical and transparent business practices.

The Center, which was founded in October 2000, is a membership organization that performs the following services for its business members:

• Conducts seminars, workshops and trainings in the field of business ethics and corporate governance;

• Develops and disseminates toolkits that help company management adopt best practices of business ethics and anti-corruption;

• Assists in the development of codes of conduct;

• Provides stakeholder analysis on company social responsibility and corporate governance performance;

• Conducts surveys and research on local business practices; and

• Legislation drafting, research and analysis and seminars for government officials on developing codes of ethics.

Desaix (Terry) Myers was appointed as USAID’s Mission Director to Russia in September 2003.  Focusing primarily on issues of health, democracy and economic growth, USAID programs in Russia operate with a budget that in recent years has ranged up to $90 million. The mission staff works in close collaboration with Russian partners from federal and local governments, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector. USAID’s mission to Russia was established in 1992, and Terry, serving as Russia desk officer from 1992-1994, was part of the team that helped start the program there. Although the Mission is headquartered in Moscow, USAID programs operate across the country in an area covering eleven time zones.

Before arriving in Russia, Terry served almost five years as Mission Director in Jakarta, Indonesia. He oversaw USAID programs for both Indonesia and for the newly independent East Timor which focused on democracy, economic growth and humanitarian assistance to thousands of displaced people by a variety of natural and man-made disasters.

During his career, Terry has held a variety of positions within USAID and in the non-profit and government sectors. He served as deputy director for the USAID/India, 1994-1998. Other international assignments include a tour in Senegal, an earlier assignment to Jakarta, and work in East Pakistan before it became Bangladesh.  He received the Secretary of State’s Award for Valor for the evacuation of Americans from Chittagong during the Pakistan civil war.

  Between stints in USAID, Terry worked for ten years helping launch a private, non-profit research company, Investor Responsibility Center (IRRC), reporting for institutional investors on issues of corporate social responsibility.  During his time at IRRC, he served as a consultant for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and for Rockefeller, Carnegie and Ford Foundations on issues relating to U.S. investment in South Africa. 

The author of books on the role of US business in South Africa and nuclear power development in the U.S, Terry has written numerous articles on development, business and corporate social responsibility. He has also taught as an adjunct professor of business at Georgetown University. 

Terry received his undergraduate degree from the University of California at Berkeley and Ph.D. from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.  Originally from Pasaden

Eric Olson, Vice President, Advisory Services, Business for Social Responsibility

Eric leads BSR’s growing advisory services practice delivering consultation on the design of successful CSR strategies, and the integration of those strategies into core business practices at major multi-national corporations.

Eric joined BSR at the beginning of 2005 with eleven years of experience in the consulting field, most recently as Vice President, Advisory Services, with The Natural Step, where he led that organization’s work to deliver advice and counsel to a broad range of companies on issues of sustainable development. He also served as a Vice President at the Boston Consulting Group, and was a Partner and Founding Member of the Mitchell Madison Group in New York.

Eric began his business career at the US-USSR Trade and Economic Council in New York and Moscow, where we worked from 1989-92.

Eric holds an M.Phil. in Russian and East European Studies from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar, and a BA in Chemistry & Russian from Macalester College. As part of his undergraduate studies, he spent a semester at the Philology Faculty at Leningrad State University in 1985.

Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) is a global organization that helps member companies achieve success in ways that respect ethical values, people, communities and the environment. BSR provides information, tools, training and advisory services to make corporate social responsibility an integral part of business operations and strategies. A nonprofit organization, BSR promotes cross-sector collaboration and contributes to international efforts to advance the field of corporate social responsibility. Alexandre Gorelik assumed his duties as Director of the United Nations Information Centre in Moscow in February 1999.

Prior to this appointment, he worked as Advisor to the First Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation.

Mr. Gorelik previously (1996 – 1997) served as First Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN in New York.

In 1995 – 1997 Mr. Gorelik was Russia’s representative in the United Nations Special Commission for Iraq (UNSCOM).

Mr. Gorelik’s UN experience began in 1990 when he joined the Department of International Organizations of the Foreign Ministry. In 1993 he was promoted Director of the Department, and occupied this post till 1996.

Alexandre Gorelik joined the diplomatic service in 1974. He spent 16 years on different African assignments, including two multi-year missions at the USSR Embassy in Guinea ( Conakry).

Mr. Gorelik obtained a Master’s degree in International Relations from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations in 1974.

Born in Moscow in 1952, Alexandre Gorelik is married and has two children.

  Elena Korf – IBLF’s representative in St. Petersburg. Elena graduated from St. Petersburg State University with a doctorate in languages, from Sheffield University with a Masters in Communications and holds a Diploma from Cambridge University in Cross-Sector Partnerships. She was a senior lecturer in English at St. Petersburg University before entering the NGO sector. She worked for a number of years with the British Council where she was Information Officer in St. Petersburg, and also worked for a year on the World Bank City Centre Rehabilitation Project. With IBLF since 1999, she has set up a number of large-scale projects bringing together business, government and civil society. She has a number of publications on Corporate Social Responsibility to her name.

Julia Kochetygova is a Director of Governance Services of Standard & Poor’s responsible for Russia / CIS. Her responsibilities include analytical due diligence of corporate clients who apply for Corporate Governance Score or Evaluation. In her previous position with Standard & Poor’s, Ms. Kochetygova was responsible for business development for Standard & Poor’s in Russia and the CIS.

Before joining S&P, Ms. Kochetygova occupied a number of senior executive and analytical positions with SKATE Information and Consulting Agency (1995-1999), taught and carried out research work at the Higher School of Economics and the Institute of Economics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Ms. Kochetygova graduated from the Moscow Institute of National Economy named after Plekhanov and a World Bank School of Market Economy, she holds Ph.D. in Economics.

Sergei Litovchenko, Executive Director, Russian Managers Association

In 1993 he graduated from the Voronezh State University, School of Economics. In 1990-1992 he studied in the USA as an exchange student. Sergei was on a mandatory service in the Soviet Army in 1986 – 1988.

In 1992-93 he was Vice-President, New Business Development of Grand Group. From 1994 until 1998 Mr. Litovchenko worked as Consultant and Senior Consultant of the Strategy Group of Accenture, first in London and then in Moscow offices. In 1998, he served as Adviser to the Prime Minister of the Russian Federation. From 1999 to 2000 he was Managing Partner of a private consulting firm V-Logic Consulting.

In 2000 Mr. Litovchenko became Executive Director, professional association for executives and top-managers.

Mr. Litovchenko wrote a number of books and numerous articles on the development of the Russian business community, top-managers’ sociology, macroeconomic forecasting, corporate governance and corporate responsibility.

Russian Managers Association (RMA) is an independent non-government organization working in the best interests of the Russian executive managers’ community. Mark Thompson is a Senior Manager in the Sustainable Business Solutions (SBS) team of PwC. His first degree was in environmental science and he holds an MSc. in Pollution and Environmental Controls from the University of Manchester. He joined PwC four years ago from a background in technical environmental consulting and has over fifteen years of environmental consulting experience. He has directed dozens of multi-site EHS audit programs, usually involving several jurisdictions on a worldwide basis and has personally undertaken this type of work in over thirty countries. More recently, he has led a number of corporate social responsibility (CSR) engagements with clients.

Mark Thompson trained as an environmental scientist, taking degrees in natural sciences and then environment and pollution control. He has worked as an environmental consultant for over fifteen years, initially specialising in environmental impact assessment, environmental auditing, due diligence and management systems development for clients across a wide range of industry sectors. He joined the sustainability practice of PricewaterhouseCoopers in 1999 and has since specialised in sustainability and corporate responsibility consulting, directing the development of CR strategies for retail, pharmaceutical and telecoms sector clients in particular. He has worked extensively in Russia and Eastern Europe, leading environmental training assignments on behalf of the EBRD and responsible supple chain monitoring for retail clients. Over the past 18 months he has been actively supporting the development of PwC's sustainability practice in Moscow, leading a social reporting engagement on behalf Norilsk Nickel. Over the summer he will be joining PwC Moscow as Director of the sustainability practice

Matthew G. Bateson

Matthew joined Sakhalin Energy in 2004 from Shell’s corporate headquarters in London.

Matthew has worked for Shell for 11 years, starting his career in Finance, including roles in project financing and as Treasurer for the Camisea gas project in Peru. For the last 5 years he has been working in the External Affairs function including a post in Kazakhstan as the EA Manager for the Kashagan project.

In Sakhalin Energy, Matthew is responsible for the Company’s communications and management of social issues and for relationships with all media, local government, the communities of Sakhalin and NGOs.He is dual located in Moscow and Yuzhno Sakhalinsk

Tatiana Krylova is a Head of the Investment and Enterprise Competitiveness Branch, Division on Investments, Technology and Enterprise Development at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). Her duties include coordination of activities of the UN Intergovernmental Working Group on International Accounting and Reporting (ISAR), the only intergovernmental group that at the international level focuses on assisting developing and transitional economies to implement best practice in the area of accounting and reporting in a harmonized way but also considering cross-border differences. This includes recent projects on disclosures on corporate governance and corporate responsibility. Before joining the UN in 2000, Tatiana was a partner at KPMG in Moscow for four years where she was in charge of the Methodology department that advised Russian government and companies on transition to IAS/IFRS. She is member of the Board of Russian National Foundation on Financial Reporting and a Vice-President of the CIS Association of Accountants and Auditors. She was previously a Professor at Moscow State University. She is a member of the Standard Advisory Council of the International Accounting Standards Board; author of many publications in Russia; and was elected as an American Accounting Association Distinguished International Lecturer for 1997. She holds a Ph.D degree in accounting from Moscow State University and was a Visiting Fellow at Stanford University, California, in 1992-1993.

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development was established in 1964 as an United Nations permanent intergovernmental body that deals with trade, investment and development issues. Non-financial reporting in Russia: Why do we choose GRI?

- Social and sustainable reporting process in Russia is rapidly developing. What are specific national factors that induce companies to report?

Vadim Samorodov started his career in the field of philanthropy in 1993 by joining the International Red Cross. With this relief organization he participated in numerous various domestic and international relief and evelopment missions. After obtaining an MBA degree and spending some time in private sector, three years ago Vadim joined the Charities Aid Foundation Russia, the Russian subsidiary of CAF UK, at the position of the program manager on the development of community foundations in Russia. CAF Russia is one of the largest international foundations in Russia involved in both grantmaking and development. 90% of its $7 million budget comes from indigenous donors. CAF Russia first introduced the concept of community foundations in Russia in 1995 and became the founder and a board member of the first community foundation in Togliatti. Currently, CAF Russia provides training, informational and financial support to the network of 20 community foundations in Russia. Vladimir Aksionov, Corporate Affairs Director, British American Tobacco Russia
Vladimir Aksionov was born in 1948.

Vladimir Aksionov graduated from the Moscow Institute for Foreign Relations and later from the Diplomatic Academy of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He spent 20 years with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, worked in France and Spain where he gained extensive international experience.

Collapse of the Soviet Union opened up new perspectives, and in 1993 Vladimir Aksionov joined Coca-Cola , first in Moscow and then in a regional office of the company as Corporate Affairs Manager.

Vladimir Aksionov joined BAT Russia in March 1995. He currently holds position of Corporate Affairs Director and is a member of the Board of Directors of JSC BAT-Yava, JSC BAT-STF and BAT-Spb Ltd.
