The £3 million pension deal for former Royal Mail chief John Roberts came under renewed criticism yesterday.

Colin Baker, general secretary of the UK National Federation of SubPostmasters, questioned the annual £150,000 payment to Mr Roberts, asking whether it was the reward for long service or simply “a considerable amount of money for somebody who has presided over an industry in decline”. Royal Mial will account for this payment as worth around £3 million.

After 35 years with Royal Mail, Mr Roberts’ final years were marred by mounting losses and the failed change of name to Consignia.
