Nearly half of the world's people will be living in areas of acute water shortage by 2030, the United Nations has warned.
16 March 2009, LONDON
A guide to water footprinting, ethics and supply security published by
Ethical Corporation Institute (ECI) discovered that some corporations are committed to working with communities to maintain a safe and secure water supply.
ECI has noticed increased worldwide concern about water and how corporations are using or abusing it. Protesters at the World Water Forum, Istanbul accused the forum of being nothing more than a platform for water privatization, and shouted "water for life, not for profit," Reuters television showed. There is also a Residents March Against Water Privatization planned for March 22 in Los Angeles.
In the new research report,
A guide to water footprinting, ethics and supply security , the
ECI analyses water strategies of big firms who are leading the way in water management. These include firms such Rio Tinto, SAB Miller, Coca-Cola, Intel and Molson Coors.
ECI’s report shows big companies are taking water security seriously. Kristina Ringwood the Principal Advisor, Environment, Rio Tinto, interviewed in this report, notes: "We needed to make better decisions, going beyond net present value to account for environmental and social values of water."
Rio Tinto’s water stewardship programme is already showing a return: “based on our track record, we are getting new access to water” says Kristina Ringwood.
The
new research report is now on general sale.
