According to the 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a 2-3˚C rise in global temperatures would bring water scarcity to 3.2 billion people.

In 2000 the European parliament and European council established the European Water Framework Directive (EWFD). This directive works for sustainable management and protection of Europe’s fresh water resources.

Regulation by the likes of the EWFD can only be the beginning of global water regulation. With a growing global population and the effects of climate change water scarcity will intensify. Government legislation on water management will tighten. Businesses are already reacting to this trend.
