Companies that take on the many challenges of online sustainability reporting will find it well worth the effort
Online sustainability reporting is a bit like running for high public office: it is far more difficult than it looks, and no matter how it is done, someone will always find fault with the delivery. On balance, however, the end is well worth the trouble.
For many companies, an online sustainability report, where content lives primarily on the web – as opposed to in print or even in pdf format – would seem a pragmatic choice. After all, the online reporting process saves enormously on printing and shipping costs, not to mention paper use. And because an online report can leave a smaller environmental footprint than a print report, web reporting can enhance the credibility of the reporter’s environmental commitment.
Web reporting can make the reporting team’s job more manageable. For those who have difficulty obtaining information and feedback from within their own company, a web report can make revisions possible even after the initial date of publication. Reporters can also update content more frequently if desired and, with the use of some data-management tools, seamlessly and in real time.
