For the first time in a long while, US environmentalists are saying that no matter who wins the White House in November, the planet will be a winner.

Both presidential candidates, Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain, have been praised for promising action on climate change.

But in spite of their strong green credentials, both candidates advocate clean coal – technologies to make coal-fired power plants more efficient and environmentally acceptable – as part of the US energy mix.
