Rwanda backs Red campaign

The NGO jury is still out on Red, a campaign started by rock star Bono that combines consumerism and altruism. But while activists argue over whether it’s the best approach to fighting disease in poor countries, Red’s impacts are beginning to show. Since it began just over a year ago, consumers have generated more than $22 million to fight HIV/Aids in Rwanda.

Rwandan officials say Red contributions have built 33 testing and treatment centres, supplied medicine for more than 6,000 women to keep them from transmitting HIV to their babies and financed counselling and testing for thousands more patients.
