Makers of mobile phones, laptops and MP3 players are feeling the campaign heat amid claims that their products contain precious metals that are destroying communities in parts of Africa.

Sony, Hewlett-Packard, Motorola and Microsoft stand accused of fuelling armed conflict, worker exploitation and environmental destruction in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) because of their demand for tin – used in soldering components to circuit boards in mobile phones and other consumer electronics.

And, according to campaigners MakeITfair, demand from these brands for the precious platinum group of metals is contributing to the forced removal of communities in South Africa to make way for mines.
