John Russell, managing editor: Was 2007 the year that companies woke up to the fact that the solutions on offer for reducing their carbon footprints would not be enough to stop catastrophic climate change?

Tobias Webb, founding editor: If you look at carbon offsets, biofuels, hybrid cars, nuclear energy, all have begun to be discussed at some point this year as having serious strings attached. Lots of companies, PR firms and commentators jumped on the bandwagon. Then people started saying: “Hang on a minute, that’s only 5 per cent of what we need.” It’s perhaps simplistic, but we’re collectively realising there’s no sustainability panacea, just 5 per cent solutions that might one day add up to a more sustainable world for business.
