Big-box painted green

Home Depot, the second largest retailer in the US after Wal-Mart, is to launch an environmental label for 3,000 products including energy-saving lightbulbs and natural insect killers.

The chain hopes to apply its Eco-Options brand to 6,000 products by 2009, representing 12% of sales. Home Depot is introducing the label to the US market after successfully offering Eco-Options in Canada since 2004. The move shows Home Depot is preparing to compete with its bigger rival on environmental credentials.
