On London’s Mile End Road stands a symbol of the city’s working class history: an imposing building called the People’s Palace.

Three thousand local workers attended its night classes at the turn of the 20th century. The meeting rooms and auditorium, opened by Queen Victoria in 1887, witnessed the rise of trade unionism and the Labour movement.

Today, the East End’s traditional industries have gone and trade unionism has lost its strength. But a new organisation that holds meetings in the People’s Palace has been hailed as offering a way to rejuvenate the movement: the East London Citizens Organisation.
