For those of us accustomed to reading criticism of pharmaceutical companies for putting “profits before people”, the news that GlaxoSmithKline has developed a product that the company predicts will never make a profit, may surprise many.

In a move that will no doubt generate much debate among industry critics and supporters alike, GSK announced on 30 March that they have made an application to the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) for a scientific opinion on a combination vaccine called Globorix intended for use only in Africa.

Globorix is primarily a conjugate meningitis A and C vaccine, but it will protect against a host of other diseases that kill many children in Africa and elsewhere including diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hepatitis B and haemophilus influenza type b.
