Concerns about cost have so far dominated the run-up to the London 2012 Olympics.

News that the total budget for the games has risen to £9.35 billion, almost three times the original estimate of £3.4 billion, means some are doubting the desirability of hosting the event at all. The fear is the Olympics will be an even more expensive version of London’s other great white elephant, the Millennium Dome.

Supporters of London 2012 are worried the bid’s finer aim of regenerating the Lower Lea Valley, a deprived area in the east of the capital, may now be overlooked.
