Rose Aesephie Seraphen runs a busy market stall in the rural town of Hinche, eastern Haiti. She is one of thousands of small entrepreneurs in this troubled Caribbean country benefiting from an innovative financing programme.

Trade was not always so brisk, 34-year-old Seraphen says. With no access to capital, she was unable to buy much stock and could not earn enough to send her three children to school.

With a small loan from Fonkoze, a specialist microcredit organisation, she has been able to increase her merchandise and seen her profits go up as a result.
