New rules issued by China’s Cabinet in September appeared to give the state-run news agency Xinhua a virtual monopoly over the distribution of news in China while shutting the door firmly on foreign news agencies such as AP, Reuters and Bloomberg.

All news will have to be funnelled through Xinhua, which can censor the information before release.

There was a predictable outcry over the new regulations from news organisations and press freedom lobbyists – and rightly so.
