The chemical explosion in Jilin that has polluted Harbin’s water supply is an environmental disaster of monumental scale.

However, it also illustrates something else – just how China may cope with an epidemic of avian influenza (bird flu) if it takes hold of China’s 14 billion strong poultry flock.
