The unprecedented backing for the new federation from high-level government officials has suggested that Beijing is becoming increasingly serious about environmental fall-out after a decade of unparalleled economic development.

For example, the State Environmental Protection Authority (SEPA), itself finding a stronger voice of late, has reported that complaints received regarding the state of the environment in China have increased by 30% each year for the past three years.

Also, a Chinese Academy of Sciences research project has argued that 75% of chronic diseases recorded in the country were because of pollution.
