It seems that every week there is a news story about some plant or animal threatened with extinction because of human activity and consumption. Fish are no different.

Overfishing, pollution and the degradation of marine environments are depleting fish stocks. Irresponsible fishing practices damage other marine life. It’s been a while since campaigners first drew attention to dolphins getting caught in tuna fish nets. But they are by no means the only animals affected by our seemingly irrepressible desire for fish.

It was against this background that the Marine Stewardship Council was set up in 1996 with funding from Unilever and the World Wildlife Fund. It operates a voluntary scheme whereby fisheries around the world can apply to be independently assessed by certification bodies approved or accredited by the MSC, against its environmental standard.
