Until relatively recently, managing this disease, the greatest incidence of which is in Africa, was certainly not one of the strategic initiatives of most companies in the developed world. It seemed to be a case of the “first world” watching the plight of the poor with a vague sense of unease, secure in the knowledge of its own healthcare systems.

This outlook has been shaken up. Granted, many organisations are not yet out of the starting blocks, but many of the larger companies do have in place comprehensive and innovative programmes to fight the pandemic.

The reasons for this change in perspective are twofold: practical and ethical.
